Coolum News - October 2006

Community health must begin with oneself, with nourishment for your body through good food and consistent exercise that meets your needs. The effect is contagious!

In my 10 years of working as a Personal Trainer and within community health, two common questions I am often asked are about ‘weight training for women’ and ‘core postural training’ for men and women of all ages.

Quite simply, core postural training involves performing exercises for the central part of your body - in particular your abdominals and lower back. The reason that core training is so important, is that these muscles are involved in a major way in any sport and activity you care to name. Not only that, they are also essential for leading an active healthy life. ?There are numerous machines that will strengthen the muscles of the abdomen and lower back, hundreds of different possibilities you can do on the mats, and on the Swiss Ball.

Weight training for women creates strong ligaments and tendons, which serve to support the joints and decrease the likelihood of injury from other activities. Bone density increases dramatically, reducing the risk of osteoporosis. It enables one greater involvement in daily activities throughout their life.

The increase in resting metabolism created by strength training also helps women who are trying to reduce body fat do so more easily. When done sufficiently and consistently, strength training increases muscle fiber size. Once muscle fibers enlarge, they consume more energy - which boosts our metabolism.

Creating strength in either of these training methods is relatively simple and should be apart of anybody's workout programme. A reasonable variety of exercises performed three or four times a week will provide all the strength and conditioning you need.

Just a few of the benefits include:

Physical

  • Decreased body fat/increased muscle bulk and tone
  • Decreased bone mineralization
  • Deceased resting heart rate and resting blood pressure
  • More efficient use of food energy

Psychological

  • Improved sense of self reliance and confidence
  • Decreased overall feelings of stress and tension
  • More constructive responses to disappointments

Not to mention extra energy and great sleep!

Enjoy!

Personal guide to health and fitness

It could have been serendipitous that led personal trainer Tony Buksh to the heights of Coolum when he moved from Melbourne a few years ago.

In his treetop studio, tropical surroundings and nearby beach he found exactly the mix of outdoor/indoor environments he prefers to build into his clients’ programs.

Creating a lifestyle, making good choices about being healthy and having fun on the way is the keynote behind Evolve Personal Training.

Tony has had 10 years experience and has owned and managed a studio in St. Kilda. He provides aerobic and resistance training, a bit of boxing, injury prevention and rehabilitation, postural and core strength training, sports conditioning, nutritional advice and a kids fun program.

All training is geared to the client’s individual goals and their fitness level.

Tony looks at their goals and also what he as a trainer thinks is important to them before developing a program.

That is how he gets variety. You don’t have to have the same routine all the time, he said.

He doesn’t believe in dieting but in eating balanced meals, exercising regularly, developing habits of consistency and moderation to feel better and achieve goals.
